Today, the Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT) and the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) formalized a strategic partnership that advances a shared vision for strengthening higher education and scientific research in Albania.
At the core of this agreement is the implementation of the Research Expertise from the Academic Diaspora (READ) program and its new component, BRIDGE (Boosting Research and Integrating Diaspora for Education Growth), a fully funded initiative designed and supported by AADF, which aims to strengthen the capacities of higher education institutions in securing and managing competitive research funding.
This collaboration is grounded in a shared philosophy: that sustainable academic development requires strong institutions, empowered human resources, and the active engagement of the Albanian academic diaspora, as well as international expertise.
This partnership is of particular importance as it is fully aligned with the transformation that AUT is already undertaking in cooperation with University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). The reform being implemented at AUT, especially in the field of scientific research and institutional development, is guided by the same philosophy: strengthening internal capacities while opening the university to diaspora scholars and international researchers, integrating them into every dimension of academic life.
Of particular importance is the fact that this reform process itself demonstrates a fundamental principle: only through deep, structured reforms with a long-term vision can the meaningful involvement of the Albanian diaspora in academic life be encouraged and made possible.
Creating the right environment, upholding high standards, and providing concrete opportunities is key to unlocking this potential—and this is precisely what AUT aims to achieve.
In this spirit, the agreement also feresees the establishment of joint working groups, which will design and develop ambitious, high-impact projects, particularly in the fields of education and agriculture, contributing not only to institutional growth but also to the development of the entire system in Albania.
By aligning this partnership with the ongoing reforms at AUT, a sustainable model is being built—one that places diaspora engagement, internationalization, and research excellence at the core as key pillars of development.
This is not just a partnership; it is the continuation of a clear and sustainable vision that connects local potential with global expertise and builds a resilient model for the future.
