At the Experimental Station of the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (IPGR), near the Agricultural University of Tirana, a Field Day was organized with the participation of public institutions, agricultural sector experts, and business representatives.
The event was organized in cooperation with the State Seed and Seedling Institute (SSSI) and served as a platform for presenting the results of scientific research and experiments conducted in the field of plant genetic resources. Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Agronomic Sciences of the Agricultural University of Tirana, as well as private sector stakeholders operating in the field of agriculture, participated in the event.
During the presentations, researchers from the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (IPGR) shared the results of research experiments related to the regeneration, evaluation, and characterization of plant genetic resources, highlighting the importance of their conservation and utilization for the sustainable development of Albanian agriculture.
A significant part of the event was dedicated to the presentation of the preliminary results from the testing of ten potato varieties, a process carried out by the State Seed and Seedling Institute (SSSI) with the aim of identifying the varieties best suited to the agro-climatic conditions of the Tirana region. The testing seeks to assess their potential for commercial cultivation, industrial processing, and fresh consumption, as well as to support the registration of the most promising varieties in the National Variety Catalogue.
Participants had the opportunity to visit the experimental plots, gain first-hand insight into the plant material being tested, and discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving agricultural production through scientific research and innovation.
Through events such as this, the Agricultural University of Tirana continues to strengthen the link between scientific research, public institutions, and the private sector, thereby contributing to the development of a more competitive and sustainable agricultural sector in the country.
